How To Learn English Online For Beginners

Learning a new languageLearning a new language is difficult. It can be overwhelming, but it can be done, if the person is willing to take the time and do what is necessary.

This lesson is about how to learn English online for beginners.

If you’re truly ready to learn, you need to make a commitment to yourself that you will allow yourself the time it takes, don’t expect too much from yourself, and you will need to practice every day, no matter what.

Whether you learn face-to-face with a teacher who is in the room with you, take a self-study/self-learning course and learn without a teacher, or if you work with a teacher on the internet, the same is true.

It’s not going to be easy and how you learn best is something that only you know

I am a teacher who teaches English online to adults who are beginners. I will explain how I do that.
Use Google Translate

Let’s Get Started

Get startedThe first thing you need to learn if you haven’t already learned it, is the English alphabet.

  • Learn all the letters themselves
  • Learn how to pronounce each letter
  • Learn the sound(s) each letter make(s)
  • Learn at least one word that begins with each letter
  • Learn which letters are vowels

After that, you need to learn to count to 100 in English.

I use Google Translate to communicate with my English-learning students. It’s easy to use and it’s easy to learn how to use it.

At some point, you will need to learn how to move forward without using a translator but in the beginning, assuming you know little or no English, you need to be able to translate English to your language and vice versa.

It’s like learning to ride a two-wheel bicycle using training wheels. Sooner or later, you take off the training wheels but in the beginning, it’s what you need.

Depending on how well you know your way around on the internet, and how to use a computer, if you’re going to learn English using your computer, it might be a good time to learn or review some basic computer terms in English, such as:

  • Download
  • Open/close a file
  • Copy and paste
  • Website
  • Email
  • Link

I also use a picture dictionary to introduce new words and terms, especially for beginners. If you don’t have one, this might be a good time to get one, to at least have access to one.

How Much Time Do You Have To Learn?

How much time?If you are expecting to learn a new language, you need to be realistic about how long it will take for you to be fluent.

Some people learn very quickly because it comes easily for them. For others, it’s very difficult and they struggle a lot. Most people learn a little at a time for the rest of their lives.

Regardless of how long it takes for you to learn, you need to understand that eveyone is different. The worst thing you can do is to compare yourself to others. You will learn in your way, in your own time, whatever that is and however long it takes.

I suggest that you focus on learning one new thing a day, every day. If you’re able to learn more than that, great! If not, that’s okay. I wouldn’t try to learn too much too fast.

The key is to keep going and never stop. Furthermore, you need to practice what you learn and you need to do that all the time.

Learning a new language is learning a new way to think.

You don’t want to stop speaking in your native/first language but, at the same time, if you want to learn a new language, you need to constantly be learning and practicing a little at a time.

There will come a time when you realize how much you’ve learned and you will feel comfortable with your new language. I can’t tell you when that will be, and I don’t suggest you try to predict when that will be.

It will happen when it happens and it will only happen if you keep at it continually and constantly.

I will paraphrase an old saying:

What is the best way to devour an elephant?

One bite at a time.

You don’t need to devour an elephant to learn English but the principle is the same.  You can only do what you can do but, you have to do it.

Nobody can do it for you.

Learn The Parts Of A Sentence

grammarI believe in fundamentals in whatever I’m involved with. That includes the English language. Fully understanding the basics creates a foundation that is the basis for everything that comes after it.

What I’ve suggested up to this point are all parts of that foundation.  However, if we are going to create a solid foundation, we need all the ingredients.

If we’re talking about a solid concrete foundation, you need sand, rocks, cement, and water.

I’ve given you the sand and rocks.  Now, it’s time to add the cement and water.

In this case, the cement and water is grammar.

Yuck!

Boring!

Yes, but it’s necessary.

By understanding the structure of a sentence, allows the teacher to teach and the learner to learn the variables of the language. In English, there are countless exceptions and variations, but there are also some constants that never change.

This is where grammar enters and why it’s so important.

You may know lots of words and what they mean but do you know how to use them in a sentence?  Do you know the different forms of the words?

Do you know what the two main parts of a sentence are?

They are:

  • The subject
  • The predicate

Knowing this, will help you to uderstand the eight parts of speech in English.

Once you understand correct grammar, you will be better able to:

  • Read in English
  • Write in English
  • Speak in English
  • Listen in English

In other words, it is the basis for you to understand and begin to think in English.

Having said that, as important as grammar is, there’s a lot more to learning a language than that.

This is where practice is very important.

Furthermore, there are several words and terms in English that are not considered grammatically corect. It’s what is known as slang. There’s a lot of it in English.

I don’t spend a lot of time teaching it but I like my students to be able to recognize it.

What’s The Best Way For Beginners To Learn?

best wayThere are too many variables to the question to be able to provide a single answer.

As stated, everyone is different. What’s best for one person may or may not be best for someone else.

I made some suggestions above about where to begin but how you go about that will depend on what’s best for you.

I like to think that working with me is the best way. Many students have told me I’m the best teacher they’ve ever had. It’s flattering to hear that but, is it realistic for me to say I’m the best for everone?

I don’t think so. However, I invite you work with me. You can decide for yourself if I’m who and what’s best for you.

If you take advantage of the tools I’ve suggested, I’m confident it will help you understand.

There are countless teachers and programs available.

Two that I’m familiar with are:

One thing is for sure, the sooner you begin, the sooner will learn English.

If one method, program or teacher doesn’t work, try something or someone else but, keep at it and keep practicing what you have learned.

  1. I’ve always heard that English is one of the hardest languages to learn.  And, even as an English speaker, myself, I can appreciate how this would be true.  The pronunciations and spellings are so inconsistent.  That’s gotta be frustrating.  But you seem to have a real well laid out approach.  The internet is making everything easier and utilizing Translations has got to help, a lot.  One-on-one is probably still the best.  But being able to make leaps on their own, through internet learning, certainly must ease the way for ESL students.

It looks like you’ve put together an excellent program that facilitates multiple learning styles.

    • Hi Anna.  It’s great to hear from you.  That was my paternal grandmother’s name.  🙂  Thanks for your comments.  I like to think I have an excellent program and approach.  The feedback I receive from students and other teachers indicates that it’s true.

Yes, the translations make life much easier.

Many people say that’s not a good way to teach but, I remember when people said that about using a calculator, saying it doesn’t allow people to understand the math problem.

The truth about translators is, when you’re trying to teach someone who knows little, if any English, how else are they to know what I’m saying?  The translator allows things to move along smoothly and more quickly.

If I have my choice between teaching in person or online, I’ll take online any day.  Not because I dislike teaching in person but because I don’t like to have to go somewhere to do what I love to do.  I want to be able to do it wherever I am.

I want to retire but I don’t want to stop doing what I love to do. Teaching online allows me to do that.

Leave comments and questions here any time.  I will promptly respond.
