How English Class 101 Works
To begin for free, you simply enter a valid email address. You are immediately asked if you’d like to receive an email with their “word of the day” each day.
You need to answer yes or no.
You will then need to verify your email address. They will send you an email to the email address you provided to activate your lifetime account.
From there, you will create a password. Once your password is created and you log in, you’ve completed your initial account set up.
You will be taken to a page that offers you a boatload of tools if you sign up for the fast track to fluency for $1. You can decline it if you like, although I can’t understand why you would.
You only get one chance to accept the offer. If you decline, it will not be offered to you again.
In any case, it’s your choice and whatever you decide is totally fine.
Next, if you previously answered no to the word of the day, it will be offered to you once more.
I recommend that if you didn’t already yes, that you do it now. You’ll be glad you did.
Next, you will be asked your level of English learning:
- Level 1-absolute beginner
- Level 2-beginner
- Level 3-intermediate
- Level 4-upper intermediate
- Level 5-Advanced
Choose your level. You can change it later if necessary.
You will then be offered to upgrade your free trial to premium at a discount. Of course, it’s up to you. You don’t ever have to upgrade if you choose not to, although chances are good that sometime in the next seven days, if not the near future, you will decide to upgrade.
You will then see an overview of what your free account includes.
At that point, you will be finished setting up your account and you should be ready to move forward and to begin learning English.
From there, you will be given the opportunity to take an optional assessment, although if you’re an absolute beginner, according to the EnglishClass101 website system, the test may be too difficult.
Whether it’s too difficult or not, you have nothing to lose. I suggest you take it. It’s only five questions If you get all the answers wrong, you’ll know you’re in the correct level.
Although I am a fluent (advanced) English learner, I signed up for a free trial as an absolute beginner. I can tell you the answers to the questions are super easy for someone like me, but as per what the system warned, it may be too difficult for an absolute beginner.
I agree with that.
I deliberately answered all five questions incorrectly.
After the assessment, you will be on your dashboard. You can begin taking lessons that are suggested by the system or can choose from other options such as:
- Featured lessons
- Featured vocabulary lists.
You are free to move about the site however you want.
If you it’s your first visit to the site, you have a seven-day free trial which allows you to look at what’s available to you if you decide to upgrade.
After seven days, if you have not upgraded, you will still be able to enjoy a free account but your access to the site will be limited.
Having said that, you’re free to upgrade any time. There is no rush. It’s whatever works best for you.

I just wonder how understandable it is as you say you need to know a little English to be able to work the website, and the whole point is to learn English, so this may be a problem for people who are brand new to the language.

Thanks for your comments. Yes, EnglishClass101 is very affordable. The problem is, it’s not understandable for people who don’t speak any English.
How does anyone expect someone who doesn’t know anything about a language to be able to understand instruction in that language?
As an English as a second language (ESL) teacher, who teaches beginners, i realized that right away. That’s why I use Google Translate to communicate with my beginning level students.
I don’t know why more people don’t understand that and why more don’t use a translator.
That’s why I have such a strong rapport with students. It’s because I meet them where they are rather than where I am. It’s my secret sauce.
